Why should you care about PFOA’s and C8?

You lock your doors, tuck your children into bed and do everything you can to make sure they are safe. Then they ask you for a glass of water before they fall asleep. You give them a glass of tap water and kiss them good night. Meanwhile, the chemical companies are dumping PFOA's into the ground. The military bases are hosing down AFFF until it seeps into the ground. These chemicals degrade into C8 and make it into your water supply. They may be in that glass of water you just gave your child.

The United States Navy has announced that high levels of C8 (PFOA) have been found in drinking water near the Fentress Naval Auxiliary Landing Field.  “A firefighting foam (AFFF) that was used for decades at Fentress was the source of the contaminants in a recent lab test, and the Navy decided to test homes within a half-mile radius of the base.” Amir Vera, “Two homes have contaminated drinking wells near Fentress, Navy says” Virginia Pilot (Mar. 10, 2016).  The problems with Chesapeake area water is one of many recent discoveries linking the toxic AFFF to finding of C8 contaminated water.  AFFF once that to be a panacea for fighting jet fueled fires has been identified as an unregulated but emergent that seeps into the ground.  It infiltrates our water system.  Although most of the contaminated sites involve well water, many municipal water sources are not equipped to filter C8 out of the water source.  When C8 is consumed by humans, it builds up over time.  Our bodies cannot properly eliminate this toxic chemical compound.  Epidemiologist have linked C8 to several distinct diseases and illnesses.
